Cancer Centre opts for megabuck Nortel gigabit network

Your IT - Home IT

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) in Victoria has just signed an agreement to buy a $900,000 Nortel Gigabit data network, which will replace its existing Enterasys network, to support a converged IP telephony infrastructure and mission-critical medical applications. Last year the centre installed a Nortel IP PABX and cordless VoIP phones for staff and patients and also required greater bandwidth for its digital medical applications (including filmless X-rays). According to Nortel, its proposal alone out of those from five major vendors came close to what the centre required. Nortel proposed an end-to-end gigabit switched solution based on two Nortel ethernet routing switch 8600s at the core and Nortel ethernet routing switch 5510s and 5520s at the edge. A third Nortel ethernet routing switch 8600 provides a separate environment for development and testing without affecting the core production system.
