Verizon videoconferencing goes HD

Verizon Business has begun offering the option of high definition with its  videoconferencing services.

With the right equipment at each end and a private IP or Internet connection capable of at least 1152kbps, customers can enjoy 1280 x 720 pixel video at 30 fps.

"A key benefit to video conferencing is the leader’s ability to know participants are engaging in the topic, since the leader can see them and visually interact," said Mike Marcellin, vice president of product marketing for Verizon Business.

"High-definition video enriches the collaboration session by delivering a more realistic and lifelike experience than previously available with standard video conferencing."

As with various other aspects of IT, Verizon is pushing the green aspect of videoconferencing in that it can reduce business travel.

"This new service is one of several advancements we are rolling out to help our customers collaborate more effectively boost their productivity and meet their goals to 'go green'," said Marcellin.

Various companies offer HD videoconferencing equipment, including LifeSize,  Polycom and Tandberg. 1Mbps or faster links are generally needed for high definition video.
