Telstra launches 3G with an Idol boast

Telstra formally launched its 3G mobile service yesterday, 5 September, stressing the offer to customers of "the unique chance to watch the video diaries of Australian Idol finalists" as a key differentiator, along with the claim of "access to the widest choice of Australian information and entertainment content". The service is available initially in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth using the former Hutchison radio network now jointly owned by Telstra and Hutchison, and in Canberra on a new jointly-owned network using Telstra spectrum (Hutchison did not buy licences for 3G spectrum in the ACT).<br><br>Telstra customers have a choice of four new handsets and two new capped plans. Customers who buy a 3G handset on a repayment option can take up the $49 and $79 cap plan with a $5 per month Mobile Surf and Email Pack and get up to $250 or $550 worth respectively of standard voice calls, as well as MessageBank, and text messages. Both capped plans offer a two-month introductory free video call offer.<br><br>Telstra listed as the content and services available to its 3G customers at launch as including: access to more than 200 i-mode content sites including video content from NRL, AFL, V8 Supercars and movie trailers from yourMovies; a range of information from Australian Idol; online games "from the latest games developers"; access to web-based email services including Yahoo! and Telstra BigPond; full participation in eBay auctions; video news clips from sites including National Nine News and Sky News.
