Vodafone responded to Telstra's launch of its 3G service with a press release setting out "a few points and quotes to provide Vodafone's perspective on how we're shaping up against the other 3G operators." These included: a claim that Vodafone live! is "the world's leading multimedia mobile service," having grown its global customer base from 6.8 million active devices in March 2004 to more than 32 million devices by June 30, 2005. In Australia, Vodafone claims more than 400,000 customers for Vodafone live!<br><br>Worldwide, Vodafone claims an increase in the number of 3G devices connected to its global 3G network – from 2.20 million to 3.26 million in the three months to 30 June, 2005. Between December 2004 and March 2005 it claims to have achieved a 76 percent increase in the number of customers using the Vodafone Mobile Connect with 3G data cards in their laptop or notebook computers, but gave no number for connected customers.<br><br>Vodafone stressed the global nature of its business as a factor giving it an edge in the Australian market. "As a global company, Vodafone purchases more devices every year than there are people living in Australia," said John Casey, chief marketing officer at Vodafone Australia. "We can leverage this global purchasing power to offer the hottest mobile phones at the best prices. Our global reach also means that when our Australian customers travel overseas for work and leisure, they can enjoy the benefits of 3G in 14 other countries around the world."
