Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The Victorian Government, IBM Australia, Westpac and the University of Ballarat are backing the newly established Internet Commerce Security Laboratory. Based at the University, the laboratory will place particular emphasis on banking and financial services.
"The projected budget for the Laboratory over the first five years will be approximately $4 million, with funding provided by partner organisations," said Professor David Battersby, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ballarat.
"The alliance members are very grateful to the Victorian Government for its $1 million grant which will cover start-up costs and ongoing operational expenses over the first three years" said Professor David Battersby, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ballarat.
Located at the University of Ballarat’s Technology Park, the laboratory will be part of the university's School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences. It will be run by Professor John Yarwood and initially employ three PhD students, a university spokesperson said.
"The Laboratory will develop an ongoing capability to tackle the global challenge of Internet fraud, Internet security and identity management. We aim to establish an international reputation for the provision of cutting edge solutions in Internet security and fraud, as well as provide a world-class training environment for ICT post-graduate researchers, in preparation for employment within Australia’s banking and financial services sector," added Battersby.
Research priorities include threat and attacker profiling, forensic imaging, PKI encryption, malware profiling, fraud detection systems, identity theft advisory and recovery services, and end-user communication and awareness.
