Skype has teamed up with SpinVox, a developer of voice-to-text messaging, to enable Skype users to have their voicemail messages converted to text and delivered to their cellphones as SMS messages.

The service will be available in English, Spanish, French and German at launch (no launch date has been given). The caller's Skype ID, when available, will be shown and what they said converted into text. According to SpinVox, "Skype users will have immediate access to all their messages on-the-move, giving callers the confidence that their messages can be seen quickly, whether the Skype user is online or not."

However users might want to warn callers to 'keep it short': at only 160 characters per text message they could find themselves ploughing through numerous messages to get to gist of a message from a garrulous caller. And even at Skype's low rates ($A0.11 for an SMS to an Australian mobile) the might not like the bills.

SpinVox has developed a range of Voice-to-Screen products that it claims "convert any voice message into text and deliver it to any screen – mobile, PC, BlackBerry or PDA." It says that its deal with Skype extends its reach "from the carrier and wireless worlds into the world of internet calling."

Other recent SpinVox deals include the launch of its voicemail-to-text service with North American carriers and its launch with blog provider Six Apart to provide 12 million LiveJournal customers with voice-powered blogging. SpinVox says it will announce at least 12 carrier and internet deals and reach a potential six million subscribers by the end of 2007.
