iPhone aficionados who need access to corporate email while on the move can thank UK based Synchronica which has added support for the iPhone to the latest release (3.0) of its Mobile Gateway product that allows an enterprise to synchronise messages between a Microsoft Exchange email server and a wide range of smartphones.
According to Synchronica, Mobile Gateway 3.0 will allow enterprises, mobile operators and service providers to offer mobile synchronisation to business users and prosumers, enabling them to receive corporate e-mail on their iPhones without having to ask their IT manager to open the firewall or install additional software.
Mobile Gateway 3.0 delivers emails directly to the built-in email client of the Apple iPhone, enabling the user to enjoy the email client's user interface and its tight integration with the phone's address book.
Synchronica claims that Mobile Gateway seamlessly integrates with the corporate IT infrastructure and does not require the enterprise to expose IMAP and SMTP in their Exchange servers or install additional connectors – issues that often raise security concerns with IT administrators. Instead, Mobile Gateway uses Microsoft's secure Outlook Web Access (OWA) to retrieve e-mail from the corporate Exchange server. This facility is enabled by many enterprises to provide users with access to corporate e-mail from home or while travelling.
According to Synchronica "The Mobile Gateway is installed behind the corporate firewall in order to provide over-the-air synchronisation with SyncML-enabled mobile phones. No software installation is required on the mobile phone - the user simply enters the URL, his username and password and starts the synchronisation process. Synchronisation is bi-directional - new or updated items are transferred from the server to the phone, and items which were created or modified on the phone are transferred back to the Microsoft Exchange or Sun JES server.
"The synchronisation gateway is accessed over the air using basic HTTP or WAP transport and works without a special activation by the operator. End-to-end security can be provided by encrypted communication using standard SSL and MD5 authentication, or by using an optional third party VPN client on the mobile phone."
Mobile Gateway 3.0 is middleware, which supports a wide range of Smartphones and mass-market feature phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and other manufacturers. Synchronica claims it was one of the first synchronisation software vendors to combine both SyncML (OMA DS), which is optimised for synchronisation of calendar and contacts, and Push-IMAP (LEMONADE), which is optimised for mobile email.
