AT&T quietly introduces $10 DSL plan

Your IT - Home IT

AT&T has introduced a $US10 DSL plan to meet one of the conditions set by regulators before they approved the AT&T/BellSouth merger.

Although the service is low end at 768Kbps downstream and 128Kbps up, there are probably plenty of people outside the US (eg, in Australia) that would be happy with that combination of speed and price (under $A12 per month), even with the rider that it is only available if bundled with local phone service on a one-year contract.

It might, for example, be particularly attractive to people on tight budgets that want to switch from dialup to broadband, but they would need to check that it represents the lowest total cost including phone service before signing up.

The plan is only available to new customers, defined as those who have not purchased DSL from AT&T or BellSouth during the last 12 months.

AT&T did not mention the new plan in its media releases, and it can be hard to find on the company's web site.
