Samsung promises top colour quality from 24in LCD panel

Your IT - Home IT

A forthcoming 24in LCD panel from Samsung is intended for computer use, yet provides image quality comparable to the highest quality TVs currently on the market.
Why 24in? The company claims this size is optimal for use with Windows as it provides room to display two A4 pages side by side and still leave space for the Vista sidebar. OK, so its the pixel dimensions - in this case 1920 x 1200) that determine how much you can get on the screen, but we see what Samsung's getting at. This resolution also means the display can accommodate every pixel of HD video.

"The advent of Windows Vista and the spread of HD technology have accelerated the demand for wide-screen monitors delivering true-color imagery," said Samsung officials. "Meanwhile, a steadily increasing number of consumers are using their monitors to watch high quality video images. Samsung’s new 24-inch LCD display with its vivid colors represents one of the most advanced monitor screens available today to meet market needs."

Specs include a 180 degree viewing angle (you can't get any better than that, though we're looking forward to actually seeing it) and better than 1000:1 contrast ratio.

Thanks in part to an LCD backlight, the new panel provides "true-to-life colours" with a saturation level of 111 percent of the NTSC standard compared to 72 percent for conventional monitors. Anyone care to predict what that means for PAL video?

The announcement didn't mention prices even though the panels are due to go into production this quarter.
