WebEx has partnered with mobile technology provider, SoonR, to enable anyone with an Internet enabled cellphone to access a range of facilities on their Windows PC, including making phone calls via Skype.
The facility is include in the latest version, 3.0, of WebEx's PCNow software which enables a Windows PC to be accessed and controlled via a web browser from any Internet connected computer, Windows, Mac or Linux. It does not require any software on the mobile phone, only on the computer being accessed.
According to WebEx, "The combined product extends real-time access to desktop for search, Outlook contacts, calendar, email and multiple types of documents. Content is optimised for viewing on a web enabled mobile handset, and works across wireless carriers. In addition, PCNow 3.0 offers low cost calling anywhere in the world from a mobile phone leveraging the power of SkypeOut."
WebEx says that, "If you can go to a web site on your phone or other mobile device, then you can access WebEx PCNow Mobile Access," and it promises to expand native support for the different physical characteristics of different devices.
For security, All session traffic is secured with 128-bit SSL encryption and the password-protected online session initiates a call back to a predefined telephone number for user verification: entry of the correct code on the telephone keypad authenticates the user remotely accessing the computer.
The service costs $US11.95 per month for two months, and is
available on a free 30 day trial.
