The company behind one of the world's most popular file-sharing technologies is set to sell legitimate first-run movies and TV shows within weeks.

BitTorrent (the company) is planning to sell to sell music, music videos, TV shows, movies and games - available for download using BitTorrent (the peer-to-peer protocol), reports Light Reading.

BitTorrent secured $US20 million in venture capital in December 2006 and has signed content deals with a number of key content providers including Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Nickelodeon and MTV2. Available movies will include "X-Men The Last Stand," "Saw III," "Mission: Impossible III," and "Ghost in the Shell." TV programming will include "24," "Prison Break" and "South Park".

The BitTorrent protocol was created by Bram Cohen in 2001, who later formed BitTorrent the company in 2004 with partner Ashwin Navin. The download store was originally scheduled to launch by the end of 2006.
