Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Australians will have access to over one million songs via a subscription music service announced in conjunction with today's launch of Microsoft's new Vista operating system.
Available in April, the service from Sanity Music - one of Australia's largest music retailers - will allow users to download Sanity's entire music archive to their PC for a flat monthly rate. The 'Santiy Live' service will use Microsoft's PlaysForSure digital rights management and work with Windows Media Player 11. Users will also be able to transfer songs to PlaysForSure-compatible portable music players - which includes players made by Toshiba, Samsung, Creative, iRiver and SanDisk. Sanity Live will not work with Apple's iPod or Microsoft's new Zune player.
Announced at today's consumer launch of Windows Vista in Sydney, Sanity Live is the first such Microsoft-backed subscription music service outside of the United States for WMP 11. Santiy Music head Greg Milne would only say the monthly subscription fee would be the equivalent of buying "a couple of CDs" - which would suggest at least $AU40 per month. The bit-rate of downloaded tracks was not disclosed.
The Sanity Live service will operate from within the Windows Media Player 11 interface and allow users to browse for content via album, artist and genre as well as options such as chart toppers for any given year. Users will be restricted to downloading 300 tracks per month. The service will also allow people to buy music via digital download or purchase CDs for home delivery.
On the first visit to the Sanity service, WMP11 downloads a metadata catalogue (an offline version of the catalogue) to your PC. On subsequent visits, this catalogue automatically updates any changes that have occurred. So instead of querying the internet and waiting for a reply, with WMP11, you can conduct a fast local search of the copy of Sanity’s catalogue that’s already on your PC.
