It appears as though the nerdiest of our IT fraternity, the Linux user, enjoys things other than complaining about the price of software, growing / losing their hair and boasting about the last time they restarted their home server.

And that "other thing" appears to be gaming, and Valve has gotten wind of this and has recently announced that the release of its Steam online gaming platform for Ubuntu 12.04 will be this year! Not to be left with an epic gaming platform and no games, Valve has also been porting its successful Left 4 Dead 2 game as the first available title.

Steam has long been the industry standard in online gaming and digital distribution. Initially a PC only service, it quickly evolved to cater for Macs and has exposure in the PS3, iOS and Android space.

Servicing over 40 million accounts, offering over 1500 games, and talk of once having a 70% share of video game digital distribution, Steam is one of the reasons why our local video game retailers are shutting up shop.

And it seems they're not stopping there. They have recently licensed their Source engine for an animated movie and are beta testing Source Filmmaker to help the creation of short flicks and potentially entire movies.

One of which I'm hoping will be about Left 4 Dead 2. The launch title for Steam on Ubuntu, it was one of the more high profile games that suffered from a then "no R gaming classification" law resulting in a censored piece of garbage that lived up to the hype in gaming and graphics, but lost it all to zero blood, zero dismemberment, zero gore, and zero fun.

A first person zombie shooter is pretty much as awesome as it gets and let's hope that this release will be devoid of the pansy censorship imposed on the rest of us.
