Nintendo has revealed the 3DS XL, an upsized version of the glasses free 3D gaming device.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed a new version of the popular 3DS hand-held gaming platform.

At the latest Nintendo Direct streamed conference the 3DS XL was presented.  Like it’s 2D cousin the 3DS XL is a larger screen version of the original hand-held device.

At 4.88 inches (12.4 cm) the 3DS XL screen is 90 per cent larger than the current 3DS model.

Nintendo is also saying that despite the size increase battery life is estimated to almost double that of the current 3DS, clocking in between 3.5 to 6.5 hours for 3DS games and up to 10 hours for DS titles.

Continuing the “twice the size” theme, the new console comes with a 4GB SD card, twice as large as the 2GB SD card that comes with the 3DS.

The 3DS XL will launch in Europe and Japan (¥18,900) on July 28th and in the US on August 19th where the expected price tag will be US$199.99.
