Super Mario Bros fans rejoice! One of the world’s most famous games and set of legendary characters is set to launch exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in all its side scrolling platform gaming glory as Princess Peach is kidnapped yet again by the evil Bowser, with a shiny new objective for Mario - and you - while saving her.

It’s new, it’s for you – it’s the New Super Mario Bros 2, and it’s coming to the Nintendo 3DS, but with a new objective – coin collection.

Apparently on your quest to save the always so poorly secured Princess from the astonishingly not-yet-permanently imprisoned Bowser is the objective of collecting coins. Millions of coins.

It’s all about the Benjamins, except in this case, they’re golden, and made of gold – not green pieces of paper with dead presidents on them.

Exactly why we’re supposed to collect quite so many coins is, as yet, undisclosed, as is the reason why coins are so prominent this time around, even though collecting coins has always been part of the various Mario games.

Perhaps it is so Mario can fund a crack, elite “Seal Team 6”-type squad of guards to both protect the Princess, and to hunt down and kill Bowser permanently, so he can never again kidnap the Princess and have who knows what kind of evil way with her.

Perhaps it is to build an impregnable super fortess/castle that is 1000% Bowser proof.

Or, perhaps it is to pay for the ever increasing cost of fuel at the bowser – except that the real life bowser that is kidnapping our wallets whenever we fill up has nothing to do with Mario’s Moriarty-esque nemesis, Bowser.

Oh, if only collecting virtual gold coins added up to real gold coins – then I’d play Super Mario 2 all day.

But all jokes aside, Mario Bros is an institution, and given the 29 million sales of Mario on the DS, Nintendo clearly hopes to mint some serious coin with sales of the new Super Mario Bros 2, which in Australia and New Zealand, kicks off on August 18.

Fascinatingly, it will be, as Nintendo’s press release explains, “first title to release in-store and digitally, providing consumers the option to either purchase the game at retail stores or download the entire game directly from Nintendo eShop and participating retail partners”.

Now, Nintendo has released some information on the side-scrolling gameplay, including the fact that two people can play the game simultaneously, using two Nintendo 3DS consoles and two copies of the game to control Mario and Luigi together – details and a video trailer of the game on page two, please read on!
