Microsoft $70 million acquisition will boost Xbox Live video search

Microsoft has acquired video search engine VideoSurf for a reported $70 million and plans to add its video tagging technology to Xbox Live.

Microsoft plans to use VideoSurf technology to identify and tag video content available in Xbox Live for easier and better searching.

"VideoSurf's content analytics technology will enhance the search and discovery of entertainment content across our platform," said Alex Garden, director of Xbox Live at Microsoft's interactive entertainment business.

"This holiday we will launch voice search across our entertainment partners on Xbox Live. Over time, as we integrate VideoSurf's technology into our system, we are excited about the potential to have content tagged in real time to increase the speed and relevance of the search results."

Voice search will require the Kinect, and Microsoft has yet to confirm when voice support will be available in Australia, although it was expected this year.

The company claims a global installed base of more than 55 million Xbox 360 consoles and more than 10 million Kinects.

Australian content providers on Xbox Live include the ABC and SBS.
