Optus offers 'PVR in the cloud' for free-to-air TV channels

Your IT - Entertainment

Optus has launched a service that enable its mobile customers in most capital cities to 'record' in the cloud any program on any of Australia's 15 free-to-air TV channels for later playback either on their mobile or on any broadband connected PC.

The service comes with 45 minutes worth of free storage per month. Five hours costs $6.99 per month and 20 hours $9.99. All stored programs are deleted after 30 days. Watching programs on a mobile is quota free, but not on a fixed broadband service.

To use the service (available at www.optustvnow.optus.com.au) customers download an electronic program guided onto their mobile - all 3G devices except Windows Phone 7 are supported. Coverage is limited to the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth TV broadcast regions.

A mobile phone is not necessary to use the service: recordings can be scheduled and viewed from any broadband connected PC. However the service is available only to Optus 3G Mobile customers - and not to those on the Turbo Max or Turbo Text prepaid plans. An Optus spokesman told iTWire "We're looking to add the service to our broadband customers in the coming months." He said the service was largely an in-house development.
