Random House has published its first 'direct to digital' fiction title. It's a thriller by Karin Slaughter.

Although ebooks and readers are close to becoming mainstream if they aren't already there, publishers are still experimenting with ways of using the new channels.

For example, Lonely Planet is giving away one of its books for a limited period to mark its arrival in Apple's iBookstore.

And Random House has published its first direct to digital title: The Unremarkable Heart, a short story by thriller writer Karin Slaughter.

It is (or will be) available through various ebooksellers, including Angus and Robertson, Borders, and Amazon for around $1.
