One millionth Apple TV under someone's Christmas tree?

Your IT - Entertainment

Apple is predicting the sale of the one millionth second-generation Apple TV will happen this week.

Apple announced the new version of Apple TV on September 1. The $US99/$A129 device dropped the storage capability of its predecessor but added Netflix support (more significant in the US than in other countries).

AirPlay support means that content stored on an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch can be wirelessly streamed to an Apple TV.

The company has now announced that it expects sales of the new Apple TV to reach one million units this week.

That's not in the same league as the iPhone 3 (1.7 million sold in the first three days) or the iPad (3 million in 80 days), but it does suggest the Apple TV has become more than just a "hobby" as Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously described it.

The company also noted that iTunes users are now renting and purchasing more than 400,000 TV episodes and 150,000 movies per day.
