OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
US-based WiFi vendor, Ruckus Wireless - which recently opened an office in Australia - says it is providing Telstra with its 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi system for use with the Telstra T-Box set-top box that combines BigPond TV, movie downloads, HD free-to-air channels and a personal video recorder.
According to Ruckus its Smart Wi-Fi systems are being offered as an option for Telstra customers who need to connect T-Box beyond the reach of an ethernet connection or "normal WiFi connectivity." The Ruckus Smart WiFi access point attaches to the Telstra home gateway via ethernet and the Ruckus Smart WiFi adapter connects to an ethernet port on the T-Box.
"The Ruckus 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi systems used by Telstra are based on high-speed 802.11n 5GHz technology and are specifically designed for high-reliability and long-range transmission of IP-based high definition video," Ruckus says.
"Unlike any other WiFi system available today, Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi systems integrate patented smart antenna technology that focuses WiFi signals only where they are needed while constantly steering transmissions over the highest performing signal paths."
Ruckus claims that its Smart WiFi product is "the world's first and only WiFi solution specifically developed to reliably transmit IP-based streaming digital video over standard 802.11 technology," and that "The Ruckus MediaFlex system now dominates the market for in-home multimedia distribution, having been adopted by over 125 broadband operators and service providers around the world."
According to Telstra, the Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi system was selected due to its ease of use, superior handling of streaming video content and ability to automatically adapt to obstacles and interference that typically cause packet loss, resulting in pixilation of video content when viewing.
Last month Ruckus announced the opening of an office in Sydney and the appointment of Carl Jefferys as country manager for Australia and New Zealand and said it would shortly announce shortly the national distributor for its Smart WLAN systems.
It said that Jefferys' appointment was part of a wider expansion of its Asia Pacific operations that had seen the appointment of a total of five new senior executives in the region. The others are: Michael Lok, regional sales manager for Singapore and Malaysia; Bill Pascuzzi, regional sales manager for the Philippines and Indonesia; Joshua Mony, regional sales director, Wireless Broadband Access; and Chris Yip, director of Asia Pacific marketing.
Ruckus said it had seen a 40-fold growth in revenue and 30-fold growth in unit shipments within the Asia Pacific region since 2006.
