ABC, SBS, Imparja and Southern Cross pick Optus for satellite FTA TV

Optus has been awarded contracts by multiple broadcasters to transmit digital free-to-air services into areas where terrestrial digital TV isn't available.

Southern Cross Media Group, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) and Imparja Television have each contracted Optus to deliver their full set of channels to viewers in digital black spot areas.

"Optus is proud to be working with the broadcasters to bridge the digital divide and ensure no Australian misses out on receiving next generation digital free-to-air television services," said Paul Sheridan, director of Optus Satellite.

"Delivery of services via satellite continues to make sense for the size and scale of the Australian landscape and Optus' satellite solutions are a proven technology for the delivery of television services," he added.

The four contracts are said to be worth millions of dollars, and run for ten years.

The switch-off of analogue TV broadcasts recently began in the Mildura area and will spread around the country until the process is completed in 2013.
