RedEye mini turns iPad into remote control

Your IT - Entertainment

A small device from ThinkFlood allows an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to act as a remote control for many devices that use an infra-red remote.

The remarkably compact RedEye mini plugs into the headphone socket of an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. In conjunction with the free RedEye app it allows the remote control of TVs, DVD players and other home electronics equipment.

The software provides so-called smart actions (ie, it knows that the TV is already on when you switch from watching a cable station to a DVD), macros,  motion and multitouch gestures, activity templates for particular sets tasks (eg, Listen to Music), and customisable delays.

There's an online database of more than 45,000 codes from more than 1200 manufacturers, so the ability to learn from existing remotes isn't always required.

And for those in the US and Canada, a forthcoming software update will incorporate a channel guide covering cable, satellite and over-the-air TV broadcasts.

The RedEye mini costs $US49. It does not work with the first-generation iPod touch.

RedEye products are available from stores in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, and United States.
