Elgato gives new meaning to 'network TV'

Your IT - Entertainment

Netstream DTT, a new device from Elgato, puts a pair of TV tuners on your LAN.

USB or internal TV tuners provide a convenient way of watching or timeshifting shows on a computer. But what happens if you have more than one computer in the house?

You can install a tuner on each of them, or transfer the recorded files using a network or sneakernet. Elgato now offers a different approach: a networked TV tuner.

The Netstream DTT has two tuners, allowing two computers to be used simultaneously to watch or record different programs. If you have more than two computers, the tuners are apparently allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.

Another advantage, Elgato officials pointed out, is that the Netstream can be located close to an antenna point or in a spot that gives good reception with its telescopic antenna.

The tuner includes Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi interfaces.
