Someone at LaCie has had an interesting idea - combine a high-def media player with a DLNA server and player, and wrap the result in a surprisingly small package.
The media player market has exploded over the last year or so as increasing numbers of people realise the advantages of being able to display digital media on their TVs without the direct involvement of a computer.
The LaCie LaCinema Mini HD has an extensive feature set, including full 1080p playback via HDMI, 100Mbps Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, 500GB of internal storage, and optical audio output.
It also the ability to act as s DLNA/UPnP AV server or player, so content can be streamed to or from other compatible devices.
The drive can be conveniently loaded with content by plugging it into a computer via USB (the LaCinema Mini HD can be bus powered), and there are also front and back panel USB ports to connect cameras and external drives.
Alternatively, files can be transferred to its shared network folder via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
The player handles a useful selection of video files - see
