To be fair, not all of the blame can be placed on Nintendo and its vapid customers. A similar trajectory can be seen across movies and music, as pop culture and celebrity gossip dominates screen and air time. Blockbusters such as the recent Transformers sequel have little critical merit, and are loathed by cinema affecionados, the film equivalent of "hardcore gamers". And yet, paying cinemagoers continue to flock to the film like mindless sheep, and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen has become the highest grossing film of 2008. Go figure.

As Wiis and DS's continue to sell by the truckload, gamers need to vote with their wallets, and support the industry that's delivered so much fun and glory. There is definitely a place for casual games in every gamer's collection, but when it's at the expensive of serious games, something needs to change.
