E3 Critics Awards single out Uncharted 2

The Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2009 have been released and the awarded games are a mix of blockbusters such as the PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2 and lesser lights like the surprising hand held game Scribblenauts.

E3 is back, and genuinely deserves the focus of game critic’s world wide.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo showcased the upcoming titles of all significant industry players, and below are the awards given out post show by a panel known enigmatically as the Game Critics.

Best of Show
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
(Naughty Dog/Sony Computer Entertainment America for PlayStation 3)

Naughty Dog’s follow-up to the well received PS3 exclusive had an excellent E3.  Showcasing the games beautifully rendered environments, improved combat and excellent characterisation was a winner all round.

Best Original Game
Scribblenauts
(5TH Cell/Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment for Nintendo DS)

The surprise hit of E3, in a similar way to the excellent Drawn To Life, also on the DS, Scribblenauts tasks players with imagining, writing and then watching their scribbled imaginings come to life in-game.  Your hero needs a helicopter, if you can spell it, it is yours.

Split/Second

Set within the world of a hyper-competitive reality television show in a made-for-TV city rigged for destruction, Split/Second is an intense action racing game in which competitors can trigger events that take out opponents or completely change the track as they compete for the ultimate prize
Split/Second also marks Black Rock as a back to back winner of this category, having picked it up for Pure last year.

“The award is tremendous recognition for the innovation and uniqueness of Split/Second, which distinguished it from other established racing franchises and new properties,” said Tony Beckwith, vice president and general manager, Black Rock Studio.  “Being the first development studio to win this award consecutively with two different racing game properties recognizes the accomplishments of both of our development teams.”
