PlayStation backed Perisher ‘Launch Your Band’ comp opens

Your IT - Entertainment

What does a game console, garage bands and a ski resort television commercial have in common?  The chance for budding musicians to get noticed and not simply waste their SingStar skills on the folks at home.

Sony announces their continued support of an initiative to get a band out of the garage and signed up to a deal that could push them into the spotlight.

In the words of the Sony and Perisher PR groups:

The 2009 competition opened at midnight on 10 March and already there has been a great response with many unsigned bands eagerly uploading their music and lyrics. "This year is tipped to be bigger than ever. So far the entries have been very diverse and are coming from all over Australia, which is fantastic. This is creating interesting listening and no doubt will result in a tough job for judging," said Marty Adnum, Creative Director of Out of the Square Media, Perisher’s media agency and innovators of ‘Launch Your Band’ (LYB).

Presenting partner, PlayStation, continues its long-standing association with Perisher and is proud to be doing its bit to put upcoming Aussie artists into the spotlight. “This will be our twelfth season supporting Perisher and to have the opportunity, in turn, to support some great upcoming Aussie music talent was an exciting opportunity for us,” said Raoul Bedford, Senior Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia. “Through SingStar, exclusive to PlayStation, we have seen firsthand some of the amazing talent out there, beyond the SingStar’s who play socially to simply have great fun. PlayStation is thrilled to be the presenting partner of Perisher’s Launch Your Band to discover the next big act to hit the slopes!”

Last year’s competition attracted over 400 entries with the winners, Burn the Drama, taking out the competition with their indie-rock inspired song ‘Live in the Moment.’ Not only did they appear on Perisher’s freeride television, radio and on-line ads, they also had a video clip produced and won a horde of other great prizes. Since then, Burn the Drama, along with 2007 LYB winners Jordan Millar & The Question, have gone on to gain national media attention and both bands have released their own albums.

This year, in addition to winning Perisher’s lucrative recording deal, first prize will also receive the opportunity to perform live at the Perisher Spring Carnival, a Perisher snow holiday, Nikon digital camera, Lonsdale clothing and presenting partner, PlayStation, is giving away PLAYSTATION®3 SingStar® packs which include the latest hit artist collection, SingStar®Queen.

There are also great prizes for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places, plus the top twenty entries will be featured on the Fusion Parks and Pipe jukebox and Perisher’s First Tracks compilation CD.

Entries will be judged on originality, composition and relevance to Perisher’s funky freeride scene.

Those with little or no musical talent also have the opportunity to win an exciting trip to Perisher in the ‘Your Pick’ category. Entrants simply write in with their Launch Your Band pick and a reason why, to win an awesome Perisher snow holiday for two people.

Winners will be announced Friday 10 April 2009.
