Total War creators get Sci-Fi with Stormrise

Your IT - Entertainment

The creators of the Total War series including the upcoming Total War: Empire, The Creative Assembly, have been busy folks.  Now comes more news about their lurch into the Sci-Fi Real Time Strategy market with Stormrise.

Slowly, further details are eking from publisher SEGA, around the March 2009 arrival of Stormrise

As detailed earlier in the year , Stormrise is a new RTS game from Total War (and local Aussie) developer The Creative Assembly.

The game is set for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in March 2009 and has now got its own fledgling web site .

According to SEGA : The site has a host of exclusive content on the game including information on the game’s key features, story and the two playable factions and their available units. The site also features game trailers, screenshots, and will be updated regularly with in-game character models and concept art, as well as downloadable goodies such as wallpapers.

In STORMRISE two warring factions arise from the rubble: the Echelon, a technologically advanced race that endured the planet's fallout by way of self-induced hibernation, and the Sai, a tribal society that adapted to the new apocalyptic environment and evolved over time. Players can command units in the air, across rooftops, on the earth’s surface and even underground; this unique idea of “verticality” introduces multiple layers of gameplay that must be mastered for strategic advantage.

The website further explains the game features:  For those fearful of  RTS on a console, Stormrise will feature what The Creative Assembly is calling a “Groundbreaking WHIP SELECT feature [that] brings quick, intuitive, next-gen controls.  Additionally, aTactical Playbook gives players all the strategic choice of a traditional RTS, but with the simplicity and accessibility of a playbook”

Also mentioned is that Stormrise will be “The First Fully 3D RTS”, which is an interesting call, given The Creative Assembly’s previous 3D RTS games.  It is not fully explained, but I gather ‘Fully 3D’ is a reference to the verticality of the game, that has enemy units passing below and above each other on the map, or it is simply a reference to the front line first person style perspective – which has pretty much been done before.

Hopefully the answers to these questions will be clearer as the March 2009 release date draws closer.
