Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Real-time traffic updates are now available on certain Uniden sat-nav devices. The SUNA service now reaches GPS navigation devices from seven of the leading manufacturers.
SUNA, operated by RACV subsidiary Intelematics Australia, broadcasts traffic-related information on the FM band in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Compatible GPS devices can display temporary hazards and some units can automatically recalculate routes to avoid them.
Around 150 live warnings for each city are transmitted during each peak period.
Raw data for the service comes from traffic light control systems, human observers, tow truck allocation systems, probe vehicles that report their position and progress, roadside weather sensors, and a calendar of major events.
"This new partnership further proves the local navigation industry’s commitment to providing Australian consumers with the latest GPS technology," said Adam Game, CEO of Intelematics Australia.
"With SUNA on their Uniden devices, motorists will be able to steer clear of traffic gridlock and be better informed about the road conditions around them."
SUNA uses the TMC system, which has been widely deployed in Europe.
Intellimatics Australia plans to extend the service to Perth, Adelaide and Canberra, and to provide additional functions.
