US console sales prediction: PS3 #1, shhh! If you ignore Wii

Your IT - Entertainment

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has done his job ahead of the official August US game console sales, predicting a win by Sony over Microsoft with the Wii holding firm.  One thing is for sure, the burgeoning video game industry is not being tarnished with the same brush as the is the rest of the US economy.

Michael Pachter is the Wedbush Morgan analyst and commentator on all things video game related.  What does he see when gazing into the digital crystal ball?

Well for starters console sales will be somewhat status quo, with the PS3 hitting 225,000 units shifted during August, the Xbox 360 sitting just behind the PS3 on 200,000 units sold.

Typically the US is Xbox 360 territory, but Pachter predicts that the Microsoft gaming machine will lag behind the PS3 during August as canny consumers wait for much published and expected Xbox 360 price cuts that hit early September.
Meanwhile, the Wii will continue to blitz the field with a predicted 550,000 US home saying hello to the Nintendo box during August.

Despite the numbers expected to be posted by the all conquering Wii, Pachter points to a lack of hardware still holding the Nintendo machine back; "We don't believe that Wii sell-through increased dramatically in August, as we did not see incremental supply at retail. The company promised that supplies would increase during the summer due to higher manufacturing capacity coming online some time in July, but we believe that the higher supply began to show up only in September." he said.

Meanwhile – the entire market for video game merchandise, both hardware and software continues to boom in the US.  In July software sale boomed 28 percent over the previous year with the year to date figure up a whopping 35 percent overall.

Though Property and Automobile markets amongst others are suffering in the US, it seems the general populace are happy to ignore the doom and gloom immersed in the virtual reality of gaming worlds.
