Xbox 360 hits US$299.99, Sony to drop PS3 price?

Your IT - Entertainment

Though not officially official at this point, retailers are already advertising the new US$299.99 tag for the Xbox 360 20GB Pro.  Will this be impetus enough for Sony to change one of the main complaints about the PlayStation 3?

Though Microsoft have not actually announced it in North America, but one of the continents largest retailers Target is already advertising the 20GB Xbox 360 Pro at the new price of US$299.99

This follows price cuts elsewhere in the world including from where I write, Australia.

Using the Australian example, should US consumers expect to see a wave of price cuts from Microsoft's competitors?

Not likely, the Nintendo Wii remains on its launch price, still without a mote of dust allowed to settle upon a shelved box.

And so it seems, Sony is remaining staunch in its foreseeable pricing strategy for the PS3

In fact, the only concession to prospective PS3 owners that Sony are currently making is their free PS3 with a Bravia TV promotion that has been running since the start of the month.  For those keeping score, Sony started with 35,000 PS3's, and after almost two weeks – at the time of writing – just under 25,000 remain to be snapped up.

This attitude is backed by recent comments by Sony chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda .

"This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told a forum in Singapore. "Our plan is not to reduce the price."

So it looks like for those still waiting to get into the next-generation gaming world, either continue to save those pennies or grab a Xbox 360 Pro
