Meanwhile in the Microsoft powerbase, the U.S, February (as was January) was not so hot for the Xbox 360, beating only the PSP on hardware sales – from the NPD group;
* Nintendo DS – 587,600
* Wii – 432,000
* PlayStation 2 – 351,787
* PlayStation 3 – 280,841
* Xbox 360 – 255,000
* PSP – 243,115
Microsoft began 2008 citing hardware shortages plaguing the Xbox 360 sales figure; they also go on to point out the US$332 million spent on the Xbox 360 platform, almost US$50 million more than next rival the Nintendo Wii.
Microsoft are also hanging a success hat on the attach rate (the number of game titles per console) of 7.2 along with the fact that third party publishers rake in 60 percent of their revenue from sales upon the Xbox 360 platform. Two areas that Microsoft’s competitors have traditionally struggled with.
However Microsoft’s competitors are, rightly so, upbeat with the February NPD figures.
Sitting pretty much on top of the charts for all of 2007, and seeing the trend continuing into 2008, Nintendo have pretty much said all there is to say about how happy they are.
Still Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing is paid to talk about these things; "Our momentum has not let up since the holidays and we expect it to continue throughout the year," Dunaway said "We have the industry's strongest line-up of games for everyone from core to casual gamers."
