PS3 gets back into black

Your IT - Entertainment

Due to increased volumes and reduced costs, the PlayStation 3 console is at last returning a profit for Sony.  The future is looking even brighter in the video game segment.

All three gaming console manufacturers are now making profits on hardware.

The Nintendo Wii has always been profitable due to modest build costs. And the DS hand-held sales bubble is yet to burst. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is now also turning profits with the Entertainment and Devices Division reporting a US$524 million operating income from Xbox in the fiscal half year ending December 31.  Q2 was particularly pleasing for the big M returning US$357 million in black side money.

This compares to a US$423 million loss for the same six months the year before.

And now, even the expensive to build PS3 is getting positive returns for Sony.

According to GameDaily Biz - The [Sony] game division posted a profit for the first time since the PS3 went on sale in 2006, as operating income came to 12.9 billion yen ($113 million) for the third quarter ended December 31, 2007. A year ago, the game division posted an operating loss of 54.2 billion yen.

Sony have cited reduce build costs associated to the re-jigging of the PS3 model and associated cost reductions for parts to be partly responsible for the bottom line improvement.  Sales within the game division have also increased by over 31 percent to 581.2 billion yen.

Whilst sales of PS3 are up, the venerable PS2 sales saw a decline, but the Sony hand-held market has seen a significant boost in line with the release of the slimmer PSP, shipping 5.76 million units , a rise of 1.05 million.

On the software front both PS2 and PSP sales were down, but, as one would expect, the PS3 software figures were positive, 26 million units, a phenomenal rise of 20.7 million.

Despite the rise in both PS3 hardware and software, Sony downgraded the expected full-year sales targets from 11 million PS3 units sold to 9.5 million.  Conversely sales targets for the PSP have risen 3 million to 13 million units
