Mario Galaxy ripped ideas from Ratchet & Clank

Your IT - Entertainment

In what will be the shortest war of words ever, creators of the excellent Ratchet & Clank on PS3 have given a mild slap over the back of the head to Wii game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, by indicating that the inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy might have come from Ratchet & Clank.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this will be an interesting exchange of words with some of the top game designers going around.

Ryan Schneider is the Marketing Director at the acclaimed Insomniac studios and recently gave an interview with UK based gaming website Kikizo.   (Schneider was also recently in Australia for the eGames and Entertainment Expo )

The dialogue turned, naturally for the Marketing Director, to Ratchet & Clank and inspirations in other games possibly derived from Insomniacs work; “Yeah, I think that it's flattering... well OK, first of all, there was a PlayStation 2 game which I won't name, that was more or less a direct rip-off of Ratchet and Clank. There's evidence all around us I think, of certain games that have borrowed from Ratchet and Clank. One that we're even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he's doing it in a different way, but it's still a spherical world, so it's flattering to see those sorts of things” Schneider said.

Super Mario Galaxy does indeed have at its core, the concept of spherical worlds that the moustachioed plumber traverses to once again rescue Princess Peach.

When queried about Schneider’s comment by the UK version of the Nintendo Magazine, Miyamoto was quick to reassure the Nintendo faithful, going further by indicating he may well be simply focused on the job at hand, without looking to others for inspiration.  Miyamoto had never heard of Ratchet & Clank, asking if it was a PC game (rather than the PS3 exclusive the franchise currently has).
