Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
There are signs that Sony's flagship games console the PlayStation 3 may have turned the corner and is starting to overtake Nintendo's successful Wii console in sales. At least that's the story in Japan from the latest sales figures. However, things aren't looking too bad for the PS3 in the US either, since the US$399 40GB model hit the shelves. Is this just a temporary spike or a real come back for PS3?
The significance of the latest sales figures in Japan is that they show a two-month trend.
In October, figures from Japanese publisher Enterbrain indicated that
the Nintendo Wii outsold by more than 2 to 1 (110K units to 47K). While
this was a huge gap, it signalled a marked improvement for the PS3
which had previously been slaughtered to the tune of 6 to 1.
The October improvement in PS3 sales on the back of price cuts and the
introduction of the 40GB model had analysts tongues wagging in
speculation that Sony may have at least found the right formula and
price point to win back market share. If the sales figures for November
are any indication, then those who believed that to be the case may be
right.
November figures from Enterbrain show that the PS3 outsold the Wii in
Japan by 183K to 159K. An interesting point to note is that the PS3
sales do not appear to have come at the expense of Wii sales. The Wii
still sold remarkably well in November - 40% up on October. However,
the appearance of the 40GB PS3 at an attractive price point appears to
have unleashed a flood of pent-up demand.
According to reports from the US, November sales of the 40GB PS3 have
also been incredibly strong, with sales in early November tripling to
100K a week. However, a quick visit to Amazon appears to indicate that
the Wii still reigns supreme in sales on that site.
The holiday shopping period and the coming 2008 may well be the make or
break year for Sony and the PS3. with sales of about 6.5 million PS3
units compared to 15 million Wii units, with both consoles hitting the
market at around the same time, and around 14 million Xbox 360 units,
released a year earlier, if the PS3 is ever going to be the market
leader, its run has to start now.
