Are ego’s starting to get overblown at Nintendo? Is success going to their heads? Nintendo Marketing chief of America George Harrison doesn’t think so. But he is predicting the Wii phenomenon to continue for some time to come.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Harrison goes on record as admitting that both the general public and Nintendo itself did not expect to be this flushed with sales success.
“Demand is much greater than we anticipated,'' Harrison said. “A year ago no one thought we would be in this position.''
Nintendo have generated sales of 2.5 million units of the popular Wii home gaming console since it went on sale in the US market November last year. This, naturally is compared to Nintendo’s direct competitors, with a years head start Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has racked up US sales of 5.4 Million whilst Sony’s PlayStation 3 has worked its way into 1.3 Million US households.
Nintendo will continue to ramp up Wii production in Chinese factories to meet current and [now] expected demand into the future, with the company setting a target of 35 million total US sales
With its palatable US$249 price tag and unique control system, the Nintendo Wii has captured the hearts, minds and wallets of a broad demographic. Now Nintendo just needs to get equally captivating content to the market place to keep the enthusiasm wave rolling on.
There is plenty in the pipeline to encourage the company, and Nintendo is known for its surprising and innovative announcements that might further drive Wii hype. Perhaps 35 million is a conservative target, perhaps the PS2 current record of around 38 million would be the one to aim for.
