Fat controller and Live Messenger coming to Xbox 360

Your IT - Entertainment

No, this isn't news of a Thomas The Tank Engine game for Xbox - Microsoft is set to introduce a chunky new Xbox 360 controller sporting a QWERTY thumbpad to simplify the use of its new Windows Live Messenger software.

While Xbox Live already allows text chat, a major feature of the Spring Update for the popular console will be access to Live Messenger for communication with other Xbox 360, Windows and Windows Mobile users.

"Current relationships on Windows Live Messenger and Xbox Live will be unified on Xbox 360 and users will see at a glance if their existing friends on Windows Live Messenger have gamertags, instantly expanding the breadth of connected experiences they can share online," Microsoft officials said.

"With this announcement we are simultaneously expanding the access of Xbox Live users to existing friends and family while introducing Windows Live Messenger users to the benefits of Xbox 360," said Jerry Johnson, product unit manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft.

Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 allows messages to be typed using the onscreen virtual keyboard, a USB keyboard, or the new controller. Messaging  can occur simultaneously with other Xbox functions including gaming and watching movies.

The Spring Update includes a raft of other minor new features and enhancements, including popups to show achievement details without requiring the user to leave the game, playing movies before they finish downloading, showing which Xbox Live Arcade games friends are playing, and automatically shutting down when downloads complete.

The Xbox 360 Spring Update will be available during the week of May 7; the controller is due this (northern) summer at an as-yet unspecified price.
