Sony to enter tablet market with Sony Tablet

Sony might not be the first to arrive for the Android tablet party, but at least it's bringing something different.

The imaginatively named Sony Tablet will come in two models, the company has revealed. One appears to be a fairly conventional 9.4in model, while the other is a clamshell with a pair of 5.5in screens that can be used independently or as one logical display.

The 9.4in tablet (codenamed S1) is said to have an "off-centre of gravity design" for stability and ease of grip. It will be interesting to see if it is received equally well by left and right handers.

Sony officials claim the devices will include technologies for smooth and fast touchscreen operations and rapid web page loading.

Both models will handle Wi-Fi and 3G/4G communications, and run Android 3.0.

"Android 3.0 is a new version of the Android platform with a new holographic user interface that is designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. I'm excited about Sony Tablet as it will further spur the development of applications and network offerings which users are looking for," said Andy Rubin, senior vice president, mobile at Google.
