The SCO Group was yesterday (US time) denied a fresh trial by the district court of Utah to examine its claim to own the IP for UNIX and this looks to be the end of the road for the long-running litigation.

Linux beware: Microsoft acquires Novell, become UNIX copyright owner

In a shock announcement, Microsoft has today taken majority ownership of software house Novell. This immediately gives the Redmond giant control of Novell's intellectual property assets including the legal copyright over UNIX. Already Red Hat and Canonical (Ubuntu) have expressed their expectation Microsoft will aggressively seek to eradicate all distributions save for Microsoft Linux Vista, formerly SUSE. Yes, this is a 2009 headline. Who'd have thought? The SCO Group is back in the news with plans to auction off its core products so the proceeds can continue its lawsuits over alleged copyright violations in Linux. Is CEO Darl McBride mad?

The decision in the long-running court case between Novell and SCO over ownership of UNIX code is over.  Finally.  Novell really did own the SVRX code and SCO owes Novell lots of money.

Isn't Linux just UNIX under a different name?
