The Internet Industry Association, the peak body representing the major Internet players in Australia, including the ISPs, has once again refused to take a stand against the Australian Government's attack on Internet freedom. A question must now be raised over whose interests the IIA truly represents.

Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy seems to be trying to increase the depth of the hole he's digging with his much maligned Internet content filtering trial. The content filtering scheme and the trial are already widely unpopular but Senator Conroy is stretching the bounds of credibility by restricting the ISPs taking part to mostly bit players.

The raging Australian Internet filtering war keeps on hotting up, with the Shadow Minister for Communications demanding that the Internet filtering trial, already put back to mid-January, must not remain secret – and must have a totally independent audit.

Filtering and censoring the Internet has never been more in the news in Australia, as our Government seriously contemplates the equivalent of a “Great Firewall” at each ISP. Although the reasons sound pure, so as to protect Australians from child pornography, civil libertarians and free thinking Aussies wonder what would be censored next, and how far we can trust any government. As the outrage continues to build in Australia over Government plans to introduce mandatory Internet filtering for ISPs, a furor has erupted in Britain over a number of UK ISPs blocking a Wikipedia page because of a complaint.

The managing director of Australia's third largest Internet service provider has let fly with another tirade against Australian Communications Minister, Senator Conroy, claiming that the ISP community are not impressed with him.
