Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Live with Progress Software

Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a leading software provider that enables enterprises to be operationally responsive, announced today that its Progress® Sonic ESB® (enterprise service bus) is deployed and operational at Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

The solution from Progress Software enables BAA to provide airport integration capabilities using the Sonic ESB product. This includes the creation of reusable integration services for new T5 systems and of specialist adaptors for the integration of existing key operational BAA systems, such as the Airport Operational Database Integration.

Martin Thomas, Integration Architect BAA IT commented: “Our challenge was to find a solution that enabled the rapid integration of operational BAA systems and provides a platform for future use.”

The Sonic ESB is a market-leading, messaging-based enterprise service bus that provides the integration of new and existing business services across organizational boundaries as well as to remote sites with low latency, high reliability and continuous availability.

BAA selected the Sonic ESB product for Terminal 5 to achieve reliable integration of events in order to provide the best passenger experience possible.

Ken Rugg, vice president and general manager of Integration Infrastructure, Progress Software said: “Terminal 5 is now setting new standards in the delivery of systems that, working seamlessly together, contribute to the positive and hassle-free experience now enjoyed by passengers using Terminal 5.” These new standards require unprecedented levels of data integration and encryption, making this an exciting and successful project for Progress Software.”

About BAA

BAA is the world's leading airport company. It operates airports in a way that seeks to meet the needs of passengers and airlines while at the same time providing an appropriate return on investment.

About BAA Heathrow

The UK’s only hub airport, Heathrow handles around 67 million passengers a year, flying to 180 destinations around the world. Many long haul destinations are accessible in the UK only via Heathrow; this wide range of global cities is underpinned by short haul and domestic transfer traffic. Heathrow is connected to central London by its own dedicated rail service, Heathrow Express, reaching the city in 15 minutes.

Transformation of Heathrow is ensuring that BAA makes every journey better for passengers. Over the five years beginning in 2008, £4.6 billion will have been spent on building a new Terminal 2, as well as refurbishing Terminals 1, 3 and 4. Along with the new Terminal 5, this will help BAA to improve the passenger journey and provide a fantastic welcome to the world.
