Atlantis back on the launch pad

Science - Space

Space shuttle Atlantis has reached the launch pad ahead of its scheduled March 15 liftoff from Kennedy Space Center on an 11-day mission.

Atlantis will carry a truss structure and a solar array for the International Space Station. Three spacewalks will be needed for installation and related construction tasks.

On a previous mission, astronauts encountered problems loosening bolts on the solar array, so this time the crew will take a torque multiplier tool to help with the task.

The STS-117 crew comprises commander Rick Sturckow, pilot Lee Archambault and mission specialists Patrick Forrester, Steven Swanson, John "Danny" Olivas and Jim Reilly. This will be the first space flight for Swanson and Olivas.

A 'dress rehearsal' of the launch is scheduled for February 21 to 23.
