NASA Space Shuttle scheduled for launch on March 15, 2007

Science - Space

The Space Transportation System (STS) mission designated STS-117 has been scheduled by NASA to lift off on March 15, 2007. The six-member crew of STS-117 is commander Frederick Sturckow, pilot Lee Archambault, and mission specialists James F. Reilly, John Olivas, Patrick G. Forrester, and Steven Swanson.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis will lift off with the STS-117 crew from launch pad LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center. A March 15th lift-off will result in a landing eleven days later on March 27, 2007.

The crew is scheduled to deliver the second starboard truss segment (S3/S4 Truss) and energy systems (set of solar arrays) to the International Space Station (ISS).

U.S. test pilot and astronaut Frederick Wilford “Rick” Sturckow was born in La Mesa, California. He graduated from Grossmont High School, La Mesa, in 1978. Sturckow completed his bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University in 1984. He was commissioned in the United States Marines Corps (USMC) in 1984. Including forty-one combat missions during Operation Desert Storm, USMC Colonel Sturckow has logged over 4,000 flight hours in the military. Sturckow was selected a NASA astronaut in December 1994. He served as STS-88 pilot in 1998 and STS-105 pilot in 2001. Sturckow is the commander of the Space Shuttle Atlantis.

U.S. test pilot and astronaut Lee Joseph Archambault was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated high school from Proviso West High School (Hillside, Illinois). Archambault completed his bachelor’s of science degree (1982) and master’s of science degree (1984) in aeronautical/astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). Archambault was commissioned in the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1985. He flew twenty-two combat missions during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Over his military career, USAF Colonel Archambault has logged over 4,250 flight hours. Archambault was selected a NASA astronaut in 1998. STS-117 is his first Space Shuttle mission, where he is the pilot of the Space Shuttle Atlantis.

U.S. test pilot and astronaut James Francis Reilly II was born at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. Reilly graduated from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Texas, in 1972. He received his bachelor’s of science degree (1977), master’s of science degree (1987), and doctorate degree (1995), all in geosciences, from the University of Texas (Dallas). Reilly is an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Reilly became a NASA astronaut in 1994. He has previously flown on STS-89 (1998) and STS-104 (2001). Reilly will be a mission specialist on STS-117.

U.S. astronaut John Daniel “Danny” Olivas was born in North Hollywood, California. He received a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas (El Paso) in 1989, a master’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston in 1993, and a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering and materials science from Rice University (Houston, Texas) in 1996. Olivas was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998. His first shuttle mission will be STS-117, where he will be a mission specialist.

U.S. astronaut Patrick Graham Forrester was born in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia in 1975. In 1979, Forrester received his bachelor’s of science degree in applied sciences and engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York. He received his commission in the U.S. Army in 1979. In 1989, Forrester received his master’s of science degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville). U.S. Army Colonel Forrester has logged over 3,700 hours as a Master Army Aviator. NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1996. He flew on STS-105 in 2001 and is assigned as a mission specialist on STS-117.

U.S. astronaut Steven R. Swanson was born in Syracuse, New York. He graduated from Steamboat Springs High School (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) in 1979. Swanson graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in engineering physics from the University of Colorado in 1983, a master’s of applied science in computer systems from Florida Atlantic University in 1986, and a doctorate degree in computer science from Texas A&M University in 1998. While an engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (Houston, Texas), Swanson was selected as an astronaut in 1998. His first space shuttle mission will be as a STS-117 mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
