The launch was stopped at 11:42 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time (MDT) on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, in Roswell, New Mexico. The reason for the mission abort was that gusty winds picked up in the region, which made it impossible to safely launch Baumgartner into the sky.
When he does go up into the air, Baumgartner will ascend inside a capsule suspended below a large helium balloon -- 30 million cubic feet in volume.
Baumgartner will top off at an altitude of 120,000 feet (36,576 meters).
At that point, approximately 23 miles (37 kilometers) in altitude above the Earth, Baumgartner will leap off the capsule and free fall back to Earth.
