China announced on Friday, June 15, 2012, that its Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, which is set to launch on Saturday, June 16, 2012, will contain its first female astronaut, or as they say in China "taikonaut".

The three-person crew of the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft consists of male astronauts Jing Haipeng and Liu Want, and female astronaut Liu Yang.

Liu Yang, who was born in 1978, is from Linzhou, Henan. She is a Chinese pilot and astronaut.

The mission will also be the country's first mission in which it will rendezvous and dock with another spacecraft. The Chinese space agency is the China National Space Administration, similar to NASA in the United States.

The launch of the Shenzhou 9 mission is scheduled for 6:37 p.m. local time at the launch site, which is 6:37 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on the east coast of the United States, and 1037 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The ten-day mission will be launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, which is in the Gobi Desert. The spacecraft will be sent into space with a Long March 2F rocket.

Its destination is the Tiangong 1 laboratory module, which was sent into space in September 2011.
