Cause of Soyuz rocket explosion found

Science - Space

The cause of an explosion that destroyed a Russian Soyuz rocket and its payload, an unmanned Progress cargo ship, has been discovered. The accident has halted trips to the International Space Station, which is bad news for NASA and its ISS partners.

An unmanned Progress 44 cargo ship exploded on August 24, 2011, after it was launched by the Russians from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

It was to deliver supplies, equipment, and other needed materials to the International Space.

According to the Space.com article 'Russia Identifies Cause of Rocket Launch Failure,' the cause of the accident was 'a malfunction in the gas generator in the Soyuz's third stage engine.'

The Space.com story is based on information received from the Russian-based Itar Tass News Agency.

The Russian news agency reported on the accident on August 29, 2011, in the story 'Gas generator failure blamed for Progress transport ship accident.'

The Russian news agency quoted Alexei Kuznetsoy, a spokesperson for the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), which is Russia's national space agency.

Kuznetsoy stated, 'Members of the emergency commission have determined the cause of the failure of the Soyuz carrier rocket's third stage engine. It is a malfunction in the engine's gas generator.'
