NASA announces that U.S. astronaut Mike Fossum, along with a Russian cosmonaut and a Japanese astronaut, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 2:12 a.m. local time.


Besides Fossum, the Russian Soyuz TMA-02M capsule also contains Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov and Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa.

For people in the United States, the time of liftoff in Kazakhstan was equivalent to 3:12 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT), on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

The three space travelers are expected to dock at the International Space Station (ISS) at 4:22 p.m. CDT on Thursday, June 9, 2011.

Three ISS Expedition 28 crew members are already on board the Space Station.

These three new members of the Expedition 28 crew will join the current ISS Expedition 28 commander and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Borisenko; flight engineer Alexander Samokutyaev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos); and flight engineer Ron Garan of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
