Giffords' countdown begins to see hubby Kelly fly Endeavour into space

Science - Space

It was announced that U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will attend the launch of STS-134 in which her husband Mark Kelly will command the NASA space shuttle Endeavour for its 25th and last flight (STS-134) into space.

On Tuesday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) the countdown for the launch of STS-134 will begin at the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The liftoff of the space shuttle Endeavour and its 6-man STS-134 crew is scheduled for Friday, April 29, 2011, at 3:47 p.m. EDT (1947 GMT).

The prime goal of the mission is to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 2 to the International Space Station.

The AMS-02 is a particle physics experiment device that will search for exotic matter, such as dark matter, cosmic rays, and antimatter, in the universe. Its principal investigator is Nobel laureate particle physicist Samuel Ting.

However, the big buzz for the launch of STS-134 is that it will be attended by U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was cleared to attend the launch as she recovers in Houston, Texas, from an attack in January 2011.

On January 8, Giffords and others were attacked with gunfire in Tucson, Arizona. She was wounded in her head during the attack and continues to be in rehabilitation, as she continues on her road to recovery.
