Russia scrubs two senior space officials

Science - Space

The Russian government sent two of its top space officials into deep space -- they were fired -- after they contributed to the failure of a December 5, 2010 launch of three satellites within its Glonass navigational system.

On December 29, 2010, the president of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, fired Energia vice-president Vyacheslav Filin (the company's chief rocket and space systems designer) and Roskosmos deputy head Viktor Remishevsky.

Energia (or RKK Energiya) is the Russian spacecraft/space station component manufacturing company that makes the rocket used for the launching of its Glonass satellite navigational system.

And, Roskosmos (or the Russian Federal Space Agency) is the Russian space agency -- the equivalent to NASA in the United States.

According to a statement made by Medvedev, they are removed for "the mistakes made in the fuel calculations.' [The Australian: 'Dmitry Medvedev sacks space officials']

The mistake caused three Glonass-M satellites to be unable to reach their intended orbits above Earth (they crashed back to Earth) after their Proton-M rocket was deemed too heavy.
