The Quadrantid meteor shower is the first one to observe in the new year and, in 2011, it is expected to be especially good when it reaches its peak on the evening of January 3.

With the Moon in its new moon phase, the Quadrantids will be especially visible in the especially dark evening sky.

They are expected to peak around 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on January 3, 2010.

Observers in the Northern Hemisphere will have the best opportunity to view the Quadrantids, but some in the Southern Hemisphere will have a chance to observe them, too.

Those in the higher latitudes will have the best chances for seeing the meteors.

Even though the Quadrantids peak on the third, it doesn't mean you can't see these tiny meteors (less than one gram, about the size of a green pea) before, and after, that date.

January 1 is the first date expected to produce any visible sightings of these meteors, with January 10 ending the observations.
